Jagath Weerasinghe
Based in Sri Lanka
Jagath Weerasinghe (b. 1954, Sri Lanka) is a foundational figure in South Asian contemporary art, widely credited with steering Sri Lankan art away from modernism toward a socially and politically urgent praxis. As a painter, archaeologist, and educator, his work functions as a critical bridge between historical memory and the volatile present.
About the Artist
In the early 1990s, Weerasinghe pioneered the “90s Art Trend,” a movement that rejected decorative aesthetics in favour of a raw, visceral response to Sri Lanka’s civil conflict. His landmark 1992 exhibition, Anxiety, introduced a visual language of fractured figures and gestural intensity to express the collective trauma of state and ethnic violence. This period established his role as a “witness” to history, a theme that persists in his work today.
In 2000, Weerasinghe co-founded the Theertha International Artists’ Collective, an artist-led initiative that decentralized the Sri Lankan art scene and fostered exchange with global practitioners. His dual identity as a conservator and artist allows him to treat the canvas as an archaeological site—stripping away layers of national myth to reveal uncomfortable truths.
A recipient of the David Lloyd Kreeger Award and the Bunka Cultural Award, Weerasinghe has held fellowships at ICCROM (Rome) and visiting positions at UC Berkeley and UCL. His scholarly publications, such as Living Sacred Heritage and ‘Authenticity’ in South Asia (2011) and An Overview of Modernisms in Sri Lanka Art (2010), remain essential texts for understanding the region’s cultural heritage.
His works are held in prestigious international permanent collections, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), USA, Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan, Singapore Art Museum, Singapore, Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), Australia.
